Saint Louis GSM - Joseph Castan
Saint Louis GSM - Joseph CastanThe Saint Louis GSM - Joseph Castan shines in the glass with dense, bright ruby red and a hint of purple at the rim. With the first swirl, an intense aroma rises. Ripe blackberry, juicy black cherry and deep dark cassis define the nose. In addition, there are nuances of plum, some blueberry and a hint of ripe fig. With a bit of air, notes of black pepper, liquorice and fine garrigue herbs join in. Rosemary, thyme and a hint of lavender are reminiscent of the fragrant landscape of the Languedoc. Subtle roasted notes such as cocoa, vanilla and a hint of cedar wood point to careful use of oak. In the background, a fine, dark minerality shimmers, giving the bouquet tension. On the palate, the Saint Louis GSM - Joseph Castan reveals its full richness. The texture appears velvety and dense, the fruit ripe and juicy yet clear. Blackberry and black cherry form the core. Blackcurrant, ripe wild berries and a hint of dried plum join in. The subtle spiciness with pepper, clove and a little tobacco provides depth. The tannins seem ripe, fine and caressing, yet firm enough to provide structure. The acidity appears moderate and fresh, effortlessly carrying the rich fruit. The body presents itself full and powerful, while the red wine remains surprisingly balanced. On the finish, dark berries reappear, along with a hint of bittersweet chocolate and a fine, spicy note that lingers for a long time. The blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah is like a concentrate of southern France. Grenache contributes juicy red fruit, volume and warmth. Syrah brings dark berries, peppery spice and colour, Mourvèdre provides backbone, complexity and slightly tart, Mediterranean herbal notes. Together they create a red wine with a powerful yet polished style, perfect for lovers of full-bodied wines from the Languedoc. The Mediterranean climate in Languedoc-Roussillon, with many hours of sunshine, cool nights and the influence of maritime winds, ensures ripe grapes. Soils of gravel, clay, limestone and slate provide depth and tension. This results in a wine that combines high ripeness with clear structure. The key aromas can be summarised as follows: Dark fruits: blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry, plum Spice: black pepper, liquorice, clove, tobacco Herbs: garrigue notes such as thyme, rosemary, lavender Oak and maturity: vanilla, cocoa, light roasted notes, cedar wood The style of the wine is powerful, fruit-driven and at the same time elegant. The velvety structure envelops palate and tongue, the dark fruit radiates plenty of warmth. At the same time, the fine freshness keeps everything in balance. This red wine accompanies intense moments, long evenings and substantial dishes with assured presence. For wine lovers of expressive southern French blends, the Saint Louis GSM - Joseph Castan offers several key moments of enjoyment: In the glass: dense ruby red with a purple core, seductive viscosity On the nose: dark berries, spice and Mediterranean herbs in intense abundance On the palate: velvety texture, ripe tannins, full-bodied structure with a long finish Production of Saint Louis GSM by Joseph Castan The grapes for this wine come from selected parcels in Languedoc-Roussillon. This region in the south of France combines plenty of sunshine with the refreshing influence of the Mediterranean. Warm days drive ripening forward, cooler nights keep the aromas clear. The vines grow on stony, partly calcareous soils with clay and slate components. These soils store heat and release it slowly to the vines, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly and with concentration. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah are usually planted in traditional vineyards. Grenache contributes fullness and ripe berry fruit. Mourvèdre adds tannin, structure and a slightly spicy, earthy note. Syrah delivers dark colour, intense fruit and peppery spice. This trio shapes many of the great wines of the south and convincingly reflects the terroir. The harvest takes place at the optimum point of ripeness, when aroma, sugar levels and acidity are in harmony. Selective picking ensures that only fully ripe berries reach the cellar. Part of the grapes often comes from older vines, which produce lower yields but greater concentration. In the cellar, gentle processing of the must follows. The destemmed grapes go into the fermentation tanks, where a controlled maceration period extracts colour, tannin and aromatic compounds. Temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks preserves the freshness of the fruit and prevents harsh tannins. Regular punching down of the cap ensures gentle extraction and even leaching of the grape skins. After fermentation is complete, the individual lots continue to mature separately. Part rests in stainless steel tanks, part matures in wooden barrels to deepen structure and complexity. The time on the fine lees gives the wine additional volume and a creamy nuance.
