The Kirchenstück is the flagship vineyard in Hohen-Sülzen. It is a very old vineyard, documented even before the Thirty Years' War. Its original name was Griebelsteyn – and this onomatopoeic name is very apt. The Kirchenstück vineyard consists of soft, calcareous stones that can be crushed between the fingers. This Spätburgunder Grosses Gewächs (Gross Growth) is a tribute to H.O. Spanier's Wonnegau homeland. The Pliocene soils are extremely calcareous, and due to the Hohen-Sülzen basin, daytime temperatures are always slightly higher than at our sites in Mölsheim or Flörsheim. Hohen-Sülzen lies in the so-called Eisbach Valley; and as the name suggests, the cold low mountain stream, which originates in the Donnersberg massif, exerts a significant influence on the cooler nights. The difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures is greater in Hohen-Sülzen than in other districts. This allows the wines to retain their freshness, elegance, and their crisp acidity despite the high grape ripeness.
