95/100 John Gilman As is typical with this great premier cru, the 2011 Gouges Vaucrains is quite a bit more reserved and structured out of the blocks than either the Clos des Porrets or the Pruliers this year. The nose offers up stunning promise, delivering scents of red and black cherries, pomegranate, dark soil tones, incipient notes of bonfire, gamebirds, a touch of blood orange, raw cocoa and again, plenty of violets in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and strikingly pure and soil-driven, with a rock solid core, stunning focus and balance, firm, chewy tannins and brilliant length and grip on the very youthful finish. (John Gilman, View from the cellar) Located on the South hillside of Nuits Saint Georges, our two parcels are assembled during vinification for a total surface of 1,8 hectare. This Premier Cru extends in the middle of hillside between 240 and 260 meters of altitude, where we can find a large complexity of rocks, from the flush rock to the screes coming from the top of the hillside. With vines of an average age of 50 years, the Premier Cru Les Pruliers is an intense and robust wine which has a beautiful capacity to ageing. (Domaine Henri Gouges)
