A higher minimum alcohol content, lower yields from older vineyards and a longer maturation period, usually in wooden barrels, are among the requirements for a red Bordeaux to be allowed to bear the designation Supérieur. Compared to the fruit-focused, simple Bordeaux Rouge, this gives it more body, more storage potential and also more complexity.
