Basarin Barbaresco DOCG - MoccagattaThe Basarin Barbaresco DOCG from Moccagatta displays in the glass a dense, radiant ruby red with a slightly lightening rim, typical of mature Nebbiolo from Piedmont. On the nose, dark plum and juicy sour cherry dominate, accompanied by hints of ripe black cherry and a touch of blackberry. The distinctive spiciness of cloves combines with fine cinnamon, joined by notes of dried rose petals, a little licorice and a hint of tobacco. With aeration, subtle nuances of undergrowth, cocoa and a touch of leather emerge, making the wine very inviting and complex. The aromas appear clear, precise and elegant, without any heaviness. On the palate, Basarin Barbaresco DOCG - Moccagatta presents itself dry, concentrated and yet guided by a silky feel. The tannin is present but finely grained and ripe, providing structure without dominating. The juicy acidity creates an invigorating, fresh impression of tension and carries the fruit long across the palate. Once again, dark plum, sour cherry and black cherry appear, accompanied by clove spice, cinnamon, a touch of pepper and subtle vanilla from the wooden cask. Despite its power, the wine appears very well-balanced and precise, with great drive and a clear line all the way into the long, spicy finish. The texture of this Barbaresco is dense and concentrated, yet soft and polished. The ripe abundance of fruit is finely balanced by the distinctive acidity, which gives the wine great drinkability. On the finish, sour cherry reappears, along with a little cocoa, dried herbs and a hint of smoke. This wine has stature, depth and plenty of character without seeming overdone. It appeals to connoisseurs but remains accessible to newcomers who want to discover the style of Piedmont. The diversity of aromas can be neatly summarized in clear impressions that appear one after another during tasting: 1. Vinification of Basarin Barbaresco DOCG from Moccagatta The grapes for Basarin Barbaresco DOCG - Moccagatta come from selected parcels in the Basarin vineyard site in the Barbaresco area of Piedmont. The vines are rooted in calcareous marl soils with portions of clay and sand, which promote good water management and deep rooting. The climate is characterized by warm days and cool nights. This allows the Nebbiolo grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex aromas without losing freshness. Viticulture is strongly focused on quality. Yields are consistently limited in order to obtain concentrated, ripe grapes. The canopy and fruiting zone are carefully tended, ensuring that the berries are optimally ventilated and evenly exposed to the sun. In this way, grapes are produced that bring plenty of aroma, structure and natural acidity. Chemical intervention is largely avoided, and the vineyards are cultivated gently. Harvest usually takes place in several passes so that only fully ripe grapes reach the cellar. All berries are picked by hand and carefully placed in small crates to avoid pressure marks. At the winery, there is a strict selection on the sorting table. Only perfect fruit is used for varietal vinification in order to express the Nebbiolo style clearly and unadulterated. After destemming, the berries are gently crushed. Fermentation takes place with temperature control in stainless steel tanks or concrete vats, to preserve the fruit aromas and to manage the tannin structure precisely. An extended maceration period allows color, tannin and aromatic compounds to be gently extracted from the skins. Regular punching down of the cap ensures even extraction without overloading the wine. Subsequently, Basarin Barbaresco DOCG - Moccagatta matures in wood in the traditional way. Depending on the vintage, a combination of large casks and barriques is used. This way, the typical Nebbiolo structure is combined with fine toasted notes and additional depth. During this maturation phase, the wine clarifies naturally, gains in harmony and develops its multi-layered spiciness. Further bottle aging then rounds out the tannins and makes the wine accessible without diminishing its aging potential.
