Doosberg Riesling GG - Weingüter Wegeler

The distinct green herbal spice on the nose is typical of Doosberg and could be mistaken for immature wine, but the first sip immediately and emphatically rules this out. We recognize the greenish component from our two best parcels in the Doosberg, located higher up and steeper than the vineyards running down to the Rhine. It is present every year and, combined with the consistently higher acidity than in all other locations, offers an unmistakable kick of freshness. The aging in large wooden barrels and the long lees aging, in turn, ensure meltingness and depth, making the Doosberg one of our most distinctive GGs. Location & Terroir Vineyard: The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® DOOSBERG is located on the eastern edge of the Rheingau municipality of Oestrich. The constant wind that prevails here is particularly beneficial in autumn, as it dries the vines after rain and fog. This protects the grapes from fungal attack. The DOOSBERG vineyard site faces south to southwest with a 5 to 10 percent slope and is located at an elevation of 110 to 130 meters. The soils are carbonaceous loess-clay, partly with terrace sediments. The gravel bands and the slope, which represents an inclined plane, allow the soils to retain water well. The DOOSBERG vineyard site is a Riesling site. History: The name derives from Badger Mountain, as badgers once liked to settle in the loamy and humus-rich soils. Terroir: Carbonaceous loess-clay, partly with terrace sediments.
