Vigna Pedale Castel del Monte Riserva DOCG - Torrevento

Vigna Pedale Castel del Monte Riserva DOCG - TorreventoVigna Pedale Castel del Monte Riserva DOCG - TorreventoCastel del Monte - the octagonal hunting lodge of Frederick II stands in the northernmost part of the Murgia, is a World Heritage Site and is widely known in Italy. This iconic building adorns the reverse of the 1-cent coin, served as the model for the backdrop of the library tower in the hit film The Name of the Rose and also appears in the logo of the Torrevento winery. The grapes for the Vigna Pedale wine come from vines that are more than 30 years old and thrive on the barren, stony soils in the Murgia - quite a few of them within sight of Castel del Monte. The vines, cultivated in the Alberello bush system, yield only a few grapes. Puglia is one of the most important regions for the Uva di Troia variety. This variety of wine originally came from Greece and has been planted here for over 3,000 years. This grape variety, also known as Nero di Troia, is used for the single-varietal Vigna Pedale. More important for the Torrevento wine estate than the Castel del Monte, which can be seen from afar, is the monastery built in the 15th century. This was acquired by Francesco Liantonio in 1948. Since then, the underground cellar vaults have been used for wine production. The Vigna Pedale Castel del Monte Riserva DOCG from Torrevento is a real medal-winner. This single-varietal Nero di Troia from Apulia comes into the glass with a deep, ruby red color. At the edges, this top wine turns a delicate garnet red. The first nose of Torrevento's Vigna Pedale promises wonderful aromas of pepper, forest floor, mushrooms, undergrowth and all kinds of black berries. Thyme and mineral nuances from the limestone and clay soil round off the bouquet of the Vigna Pedale perfectly. On the palate, Torrevento's flagship starts off wonderfully fleshy and grippy. A concentrated wine with considerable length and grippy, distinctive tannins that round out pleasantly with air without losing their profile. The surprisingly long finish is again a beautiful balance of fruit and spice. Vinification of the Torrevento Vigna Pedale Castel del Monte Riserva red wine The grapes come from the DOCG-classified Castel del Monte growing region and are sourced from vineyards just a few hundred meters from the sea. The climate, moderated by the Adriatic Sea, and the barren, mineral soil guarantee excellent grape material. After harvesting, the grapes are immediately taken to the winery and crushed after a further selection. After a long maceration, fermentation begins in stainless steel tanks, followed by maturation in stainless steel for 8 months. This is followed by a further 12 months in large oak barrels before the Vigna Pedale Castel del Monte from Torrevento is finally bottled. Food recommendation for Vigna Pedale from Torrevento Enjoy this exceptional red wine from Apulia with beef, juicy roasts, game, mature hard cheese and salami.
