96/100 John Gilman The supreme elegance of the 2011 vintage has found its perfect match in the glorious complexity of Les St. Georges and the version chez Gouges is a brilliant young wine. The stunning nose soars from the glass in an utterly captivating mélange of red and black cherries, pomegranate, a complex base of dark soil tones, woodsmoke, gamebirds, violets and just a touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is very pure, soil-driven and full-bodied, with laser-like focus, stunning depth at the sappy core, suave, firm tannins and magical length and grip on the still quite primary, but, oh so promising finish. (John Gilman, View from the cellar) Located at the southern end of the appellation, between Premeaux and Nuits-Saint-Georges, the “Les Saint-Georges” climat is widely regarded as the most emblematic of the commune. Mentioned as early as the Middle Ages, this site has long been praised for the outstanding quality of its wines—so much so that in 1892, it lent its name to the town itself. Classified as a Premier Cru, the climat spans approximately 7 hectares, at an altitude of 245 to 260 meters. It lies on a moderately sloping hillside (7 to 8%) with deep clay-rich soils interspersed with limestone scree, resting on a Jurassic subsoil. Its full eastern exposure allows for consistent and complete ripening of Pinot Noir. Wines from this terroir are known for their complexity, depth, and impressive aging potential. A request for Grand Cru classification is currently under review by the INAO. The Domaine cultivates a one-hectare plot here, planted with vines averaging 60 years old, largely from massal selection.
