The Nican not only impresses with its elegant appearance, reminiscent of a Vintage Port, but also displays fascinating parallels in terms of flavor. The name is said to derive from the ancient term Nicate for the Majella Mountains, derived from the Greek words nican (to win) and aete (wind), symbolizing the strength, endurance, and originality of this region in Abruzzo. The vines come from old vines, whose slow growth leads to a natural reduction in yield. This way, the plant's entire energy is channeled into a few, particularly concentrated and aromatic grapes. To give the Nican even more depth, a small proportion of dried Montepulciano grapes (Appassito method) is added each year. The legally prescribed aging period for the Riserva is at least two years, including nine months in wood. This lends the wine additional structure and expressiveness. The nose displays ripe, red fruits such as cherry and blackberry. These blend harmoniously with spicy nuances of pepper, clove, and balsamic notes. Subtle wood notes underscore the depth and complexity. On the palate, the wine presents itself as full-bodied, juicy, and complex, with a velvety texture and a long finish. The subtle port-like aromas leave you wanting more.
