Der Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 steht für Beringers Spitzenklasse aus Napa Valley: ein selektierter Blend aus hochklassigen Parzellen, mit klarem Schwerpunkt auf Howell Mountain und ergänzenden Anteilen aus St. Helena, Oakville, Spring Mountain, Diamond Mountain und Mount Veeder. Der Jahrgang startete mit reichlich Regen, wurde von einer kurzen Hitzewelle um Labor Day geprägt und gewann danach durch kühlere Phasen an Balance. Die Cuvée besteht hauptsächlich aus Cabernet Sauvignon, ergänzt durch Cabernet Franc und einen kleinen Anteil Merlot. Im Keller werden die Partien konsequent getrennt ausgebaut, Extraktion und Pump Over Verfahren werden fein abgestimmt. Der Ausbau erfolgt im Barrique aus französischer Eiche mit hohem Neuholzanteil, jede Partie reift für sich, bevor der finale Blend abgefüllt wird. Im Glas präsentiert sich der Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve tiefdunkel und sehr farbintensiv. Das Bukett öffnet mit schwarzer Johannisbeere und Brombeere, dazu Kakao, Graphit und eine fein rauchige Eichenwürze, begleitet von Espresso und Vanille. Am Gaumen wirkt die Frucht dunkel und präzise, die Textur saftig, dahinter ein feinkörniges, reifes Tannin mit spürbarem Zug und Substanz. Der Eindruck bleibt kraftvoll, aber kontrolliert, mit langem, vielschichtig würzigem Finale. Bereits heute sehr überzeugend, mit weiterem Entwicklungspotenzial von bis zu zehn Jahre. This shows really beautiful purity of fruit with polish and sophistication. The currant and cassis aromas are so enticing and really reflect the name of the wine. Medium to full body. James Suckling The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is brilliant, with a ripe, powerful style that’s going to age gracefully. Deep blackcurrants, dark chocolate, scorched earth, and graphite notes all emerge from this concentrated, powerful Cabernet that has ripe tannins, a big, rich mid-palate, and a great finish. It’s going to benefit from 3–5 years of bottle age and keep for upwards of two decades with no issues. Jeb Dunnuck Thick and concentrated in dense layers of cedar, pencil shaving and currant, this reserve-worthy wine is substantial in body wight and power, with considerable oak impact, as it was aged 20 months in 80% new French oak. Still, it shows remarkable underlying beauty, complexity and structure. It is a blockbuster that will do well in the cellar.
