2017 is somewhat overshadowed by the two previous top vintages of 2015 and 2016. And it's true, 2017 was not an easy year for winemakers in Tuscany. Partial frost in the spring, a seemingly endless period of heat and drought in the summer, and harvest yields significantly below the long-term average. The notorious pessimists initially declared it the worst vintage in Italy for many years. Giovanni d'Orsi, for his part, must have done a great many things right this year, despite the challenging meteorological conditions. An incredibly captivating wine with a seductive aroma and just the right amount of oak. On the nose, coconut, toasted pine nuts, melted butter, violets, Virginia tobacco, and rich Morello cherry fruit. Very well-structured tannins with great potential. Full-bodied and powerful, yet despite 15% alcohol, never one-dimensional or tiring. Plum, red currant, and tomato leaf on the palate. The finish offers a very juicy acidity and a smoky, salty minerality that will carry the wine for a very long time. A truly magnificent Gran Selezione and a real discovery.
