Admittedly, the distinction between DON VINCENZO and Gran Selezione is sometimes a little confusing at first glance, especially when Giovanni d’Orsi produces both wines in the same year using 100% Sangiovese. But the differences become clear after opening the bottle. First, there is a lot of new wood in the form of roasted chestnuts, caramel and malt. But then a very fresh, dark fruit takes over in combination with herbal and spicy notes: sour cherries, incredibly fresh, complemented by blackberry leaf, dried thyme and liquorice root. In the mouth, the impression of freshness remains, even intensifies. This acid structure is all the more remarkable given the vintage's typicality and 15% alcohol. Then on the palate, sour cherries again, with tomato paste and elderberry leaf. More elegant and at the same time more direct in its attack than the Gran Selezione. More fresh fruit, less fleshy, and the tannins are also a bit more refined. The finish, with its mixture of fresh acidity and drying minerality, is puristic, almost austere and at the same time incredibly stimulating. Not only a very individual wine, but also a great one.
