The grapes grow near rivers on New Zealand's South Island. The vines here dig their roots deep into soils of gravel. Due to the moderating influence of the nearby river, the grapes ripen more slowly and develop more aromatic partiality. The fact that Viognier grapes thrive under the influence of a rather cool climate also has a considerable influence on the ripening of the grapes.
