Nach einem Eigentümerwechsel 2006 wurde das zwischenzeitlich etwas ins Hintertreffen geratene Château Soutard generalüberholt und ist nun wieder zurückgekehrt in die obere Liga. In den letzten Jahren hat es sich durch Zukauf benachbarter Flächen auch noch einmal deutlich vergrößert. Ungewöhnlich an der Cuvée ist weniger die kleine Zugabe von Malbec, den heute noch traditionell einige Weingüter im Bordelais praktizieren, sondern der geringe Anteil an Cabernet Sauvignon: 2018 sind es gerade einmal sieben Prozent. Der Löwenanteil entfällt auf Merlot (61 %) und Cabernet Franc (31 %). Nach Handlese, Selektion und Gärung reift der Wein zu 60 % in neuen, zu 40 % in bisher einmal belegten Barriques. Im Bukett des Château Soutard finden wir neben Aromen nach Cassis, Blaubeere und Walderdbeere vor allem florale Noten, die an Trockenblumen und Rosenblüte erinnern. Anklänge an Lavendel und eine rauchige Mineralität runden den Gesamteindruck ab. Am Gaumen offenbart sich eine feste Tanninstruktur. Empfehlenswert sind zwei bis drei Stunden Belüftung in der Flasche, woraufhin sich der Wein und verwöhnt mit opulenten Fruchtaromen, Noten von Minze und Rauch und Tertiärnoten von Unterholz und Lakritz. It's hands down the finest wine I've tasted from this estate and offers a thrilling bouquet of cassis and black raspberry fruits as well as notes of camphor, tobacco, dried flowers, and dried rose petals. Full-bodied and flawlessly balanced, with silky tannins and that rare richness without weight character that's the hallmark of truly great wines, it's going to benefit from 3-4 years (it's brilliant even today) and have 20-25 years of prime drinking.
