The Batts were close friends of the Symms family and planted the vineyards in 1981 to provide a source of grapes for the new Ste. Chapelle Winery. As the vineyard matured, the quality of the grapes became recognized as exceptional. For the last few years, Ste. Chapelle, has featured the grapes from Arena Valley Vineyard with a label designation. Scott is still selling much of the harvest to Corus Brands who bought Ste. Cana Vineyards
Cana Vineyards Cana Vineyards 28372 Peckham Road Wilder, ID 83676 Cana Vineyards is located 35 miles west of Boise, overlooking the Snake River near the town of Wilder. It is completely a family operation with all vineyard efforts produced by Lawrence and Meg Dawson and children. Cana operations were begun in the spring of 1990 after the Dawson's moved from the Washington wine industry to take over one of Idaho's oldest vineyards. Since, the family has begun applying vineyard techniques learned in Washington. A South African trellising system known as the "gable" has been applied to a new planting of Merlot. The vineyards have also been converted to drip irrigation which is used to apply a wholly organic fertilizer. One of the existing grape varieties is being replanted with Merlot since eight years experience has revealed that the area has a micro climate supportive of Bordeaux style grapes. Byline: Elaine Williams POTLATCH CREEK—Less than three years ago, the potential of Clearwater Canyon Vineyard was hiding. The vines had fallen off their trellises and were growing on the ground. Leaf cutter bees had made nests in every sprinkler head of the irrigation system. Some of the lines were broken. The pump needed to be rebuilt. “I don’t want to use the word abandoned, ” said Larry Kornze. “It was sort of in that condition.” But Kornze, who prospects for gold in Mexico and Central America, saw something else. Mike has purchased what he is calling a '"diamond in the rough" champagne winery' with an inventory of over 12, 000 bottles of Brut Champagne produced from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. Cocolalla Winery makes traditional champagne by the "methode champenoise" and use the old Silver Star Mine for aging the bottles "sur lattes" for four (4) years. They utilize a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay Cuvee to produce 800 cases of Brut Champagne a year. Indian Creek (Stowe) Winery
Indian Creek wines are produced from grapes grown by Bill and Mui Stowe, their three children Will, Greg and Tammy, at the winery and by John and Mary Ocker at their Kuna Butte Vineyard, two miles south of the winery.
