Avontuur Estate
Home Page Wine EstateLeopard RockStud FarmContact us Avontuur Wine Estate and Stud Farm, straddling the southwestern foothills of the Helderberg Mountain between Somerset West and Stellenbosch, is setting off on a new journey to realise its undoubted potential as a producer of top-quality wines, particularly reds. In 1983 Zimbabwean tobacco trader Tony Taberer purchased the 40-hectare Avontuur, which had vines planted back in 1974. He started a planting programme and in 1989 purchased a further 40ha from the adjoining farm San Gabriel. The cellar was built in the same year although the first Avontuur vintage was released in 1987, with wines made at a nearby cellar. Today Avontuur's plantings have increased to 60 hectares, 70% red and 30% white. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 17 hectares, Merlot 4, 6 hectares and Pinotage 4, 7 hectares. Bergkelder
One of the most advanced and the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, this cellar in the mountain was built in 1968. The Bergkelder hugs the steep slopes of the historic Papegaaiberg mountain in Stellenbosch, South Africa. This mountain is named after the clay pigeon shoot, held to commemorate the the birthday of Governor Simon van der Stel in the late 1700s.
