Aleksij Erzetic In keeping with Slovene tradition, Aleksij Erzetic's estate in Visnjevik is known as "pri Martinovih" ("chez Martin's") after the original owner. Erzetic is a typical example of the modern breed of Slovene vignerons: harmonizing the traditional with the modern, he cultivates the old Brda varieties but prepares fresh wines, cooling the must during fermentation in stainless steel vats. Aleksij Erzetic believes that red wines deserve oak: his rich red wines are matured in old oak barrels, popular barriques in new.

The Blazic brothers produce some three hundred hectoliters (7926 gallons) of wines annually. Table wine, mostly sold unbottled, represents 60% of his production; 40% is bottled high-quality wines. However, in their newly planted vineyards Chardonnay is the dominant variety. The Bordons have eight hectares (19.8 acres) of vineyards on the sunny sites of Fratovec, Pecka, and Romondovec. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon dominate the older vineyards, and the newly planted Chardonnay is intended for the production of slamno vino, a wine made from dried grapes. The Bordons prepare their red wines in accordance with local tradition: protracted maceration makes their Merlot tangy, almost bitter while still young, but the matured wine is rich and vel

The grapes are harvested carefully so that none of the berries get damaged. The berries are then gently separated from stems and precisely crushed. Strictly controlled maceration and the maturation of the wine in aged oak barrels produces a Kraski Teran of constant quality which tends to keep its specific bouquet and aroma longer than others. For connoisseurs, Lisjak's Kraski Teran is consistently among the very best produced in Slovenia. The wine is very harmonious, its bouquet balan

Their specialty is Pikolit, not the passito-style wine made from dried grapes that frequently bears a similar name but the real thing: the varietal wine made from this rare white grape. The Markovic's Pikolit is simply majestic, but unfortunately very rare. In ideal circumstances, 150 to 200 grapevines are required to produce some fifty liters (13.21 gallons), and in bad years the yield is nil. Their best vintage was 1993, and the wine was offered in special bottles designed by Oskar Kogoj for the 300th anniversary of the birth of the famous composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini. He campaigned vigorously to establish vineyards on Piramida, a hill just on the outskirts of Maribor. Many ecologists opposed the idea, arguing that the site would be destroyed by erosion if the wild- growing bushes were cleared - but they were wrong. Today, the beautifully kept vineyards of Piramida are one of the most beautiful sights in Maribor, and the Renski Rizling from the site is consistently among the very best in Slovenia.

Renski Rizling, Sauvignon, Beli Pinot, Sivi Pinot (Rulandec), and Chardonnay are also cultivated with success.
