Ata Rangi ATA RANGIÊ Ònew beginningÓ or Òdawn skyÓ was a barren 5-hectare paddock when Clive Paton bought it in 1980. He was one of a handful of winemaking pioneers in Martinborough, then a forgotten rural settlement, who were attracted to the area by three key features - the localised, free-draining shingle terrace some 20 metres deep, and the lowest rainfall records of anywhere in the North Island, and the proximity to the capital city of Wellington, just an hour away.

Benfield & Delamare Benfield & Delamare35 New York Street, Martinborough. Introduction Benfield and Delamare is the partnership of husband and wife team, Bill Benfield and Sue Delamare. Our vineyard at Cambridge Road was established in 1987 with first plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. We followed this in 1988 with plantings of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon at our Oxford Street vineyard and with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec at our home site in New York Street. Our intent, from the outset, was to produce as good a red wine from the district as we could humanly achieve. The choice of varieties, viticulture and management of the vines reflects our personal belief in maximising the local conditions with the emphasis being on the quality rather than the quantity end of the continuum. The first commercial production in 1987 was quickly sold from the small vineyard. For years William Hill produced only a trickle of wine, but such was the demand the vineyard has since developed plantings of carefully selected clones.
